It’s exactly 15 years since our first meeting with child malnutrition expert Dr Mark Manary. Today, more than 30 clinical studies later, whey-based ingredients are standard in food aid for malnourished children. Early summer 2024, he visited our head office again to talk about his current study in Sierra Leone, where one in five pregnant women are undernourished – with severe consequences for themselves and their baby. The study is investigating the effect of an improved ready-to-use supplementary food product (RUSF) on the health of 1,600 women during pregnancy and on the size and health of the newborn infants. The aim is to gather sufficient evidence for a new RUSF standard – this time for undernourished pregnant women. We’ve provided whey protein and permeate for many of the studies conducted by Mark Manary’s team in sub-Saharan Africa. The RUSF itself is produced by the non-profit organisation he founded PROJECT PEANUT BUTTER. The FDA has confirmed that four of our Peptigen® and Lacprodan® whey protein hydrolysates can be used in infant formula in the US.
