Fortified yoghurt targets Tanzanian schoolchildren

Fortified yoghurt targets Tanzanian schoolchildren

A new fortified yoghurt has been launched in Tanzania. The outcome of a collaborative project between local dairy Galaxy Foods and the GAIN Nordic Partnership, it marks the successful transfer of the first sustainable business model developed by the partnership in Ethiopia.

Arla Foods Ingredients has supported the project by sharing processing knowledge and developing a recipe that is healthy, affordable and satisfies consumer taste preferences.

Around 30% of Tanzanian children under the age of five are stunted due to malnutrition. Micronutrient deficiencies are common, with long-term risks for health and cognitive development.

In an effort to fill this nutrient shortfall, Galaxy Foods has initially targeted the product at schools.

The project partners are GAIN, SUN Business Network, Arla Foods Ingredients, Novonesis, Promaco and DSM, along with the Tanzanian Dairy Board and Tanzania Bureau of Standards
