The importance of sialic acid as a component in infant cognitive development continues to gather momentum. Human and bovine milk differ considerably in their concentration of sialic acid and consequently, the intake of sialic acid between breastfed and formula fed infants differs significantly. A piglet study has confirmed that dietary sialic acid using CGMP as a source of sialic acid improves learning and memory during early development. The fact that breastfed infants have slightly better cognitive development than formula fed infants may be partly linked to the sialic acid in the diet.
