High blood sugar levels are a global health concern. Based on new clinical evidence showing improved blood sugar levels with whey proteins, Arla Foods Ingredients has developed a pre-meal drink concept with fibre & whey protein.
Global statistics tell an alarming tale about the impact of high blood sugar levels on human health. The World Health Organization, for example, ranked high blood sugar third in the top ten of risk factors linked to 33% of deaths worldwide1.
Hyperglycaemia, as it’s also known, hits all income groups - high, middle and low – and is typically brought on by age, obesity and inactive lifestyles. Hyperglycaemia affects people with diabetes, either because they do not produce enough insulin (type 1) or because their body does not respond to insulin as it should (type 2).
Growth in products for blood glucose control
Global food and beverages product launches targeting blood glucose control* have experienced 16.8% compound annual growth (CAGR) from 2010 to 20162 . This growth has been driven by concern about the health risks of high blood glucose levels, combined with consumers’ general preference for foods rather than drugs, due to the numerous side-effects of medication.
Ready to drink (RTD) product launches addressing blood glucose control have also experienced healthy growth, with 15.7% CAGR over the same period. These RTD products mainly focus on the total amount of fibres as well as the glycaemic index (GI) of the carbohydrates. However, new clinical evidence demonstrates that whey proteins also have a positive effect on blood glucose control. This discovery has been the inspiration for developing a small drink prototype containing fibre and high level of whey protein.
Improve blood sugar levels naturally with a pre-meal Lacprodan ® whey protein SHOT
By combining the beneficial effects of whey protein and non-digestible fibres on blood glucose control, Arla Foods Ingredients has developed a pre-meal shot application which provides 15g of Lacprodan® whey protein and more than 3g of fibres in a small 100ml serving.
The pre-meal whey shot application is our suggestion for a natural nutritional strategy for managing blood glucose levels as part of a balanced and healthy diet. It offers the following nutrition and health benefits:
- Induces a lower blood glucose rise after consumption3
- High in protein (15g whey protein/100 ml)
- High in fibre (>3g/100ml)
- High in calcium and source of phosphorous4
A clinical study in collaboration with researchers at the University of Newcastle in the UK has documented improved blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes patients following intake of 15g Lacprodan® whey protein. A scientific paper presenting results from this clinical study is currently in submission and will be made available once published.
