Enhanced endurance performance

Exercise causes oxidative damage to increase and the antioxidant glutathione (GSH) to decline, , which can lead to fatigue and reduced performance. This can be overcome by enhancing concentrations of GSH. Endurance is then improved by raising the body’s oxidative capacity.

As cysteine is the factor that limits the rate of GSH formation, it goes without saying that an increase in cysteine may increase GSH oxidative capacity.

At Arla Foods Ingredients, we produce alpha-lactalbumin whey fractions that are rich in cysteine. Using them as supplements, it is possible to enhance antioxidant levels, reduce oxidative stress and improve performance.

Carbohydrates will always be a key source of nutrition for endurance athletes. However, consumption of high-quality proteins in the two-hour ‘window of opportunity’ straight after exercise is known to improve recovery and enhance the body’s ability to adapt to training – reducing recovery time and improving performance.
