Ingredient development for infant formula

Numerous population studies confirm differences between breast-fed and formula-fed babies. At Arla Food Ingredients, we continuously monitor these differences, identify components or benefits that formula milk doesn’t currently provide, and present new directions to help our customers close the gap.

While infant formulas have developed tremendously throughout the last decade, there are still possibilities to improve and provide even better solutions for formula-fed babies. Discovering and delivering such improvements is both complex and fascinating as science continues to evolve.

The AFI team responsible for developing new solutions comprises dedicated infant nutrition scientists and milk and whey experts with extensive technical expertise in the development of such products.

The nutrition science department is dedicated to identifying solutions and providing the evidence required to document the safety, suitability and efficacy of our ingredients. This is done in close dialogue with our academic partners in the pediatric nutrition field.

Our senior manager for pediatric, Anne Staudt Kvistgaard, puts it this way: “We understand the science and the market, and we engage with our customers to recognise what is of interest to the industry and to support continued improvements. In fact, it is our passion as scientists to find reliable evidence, bringing our findings and manufacturing capabilities together to come up with the right solution.” 

Arla Foods Ingredients supports the WHO recommendation for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant’s life and continued breastfeeding up to the age of two or beyond in combination with nutritionally appropriate complementary foods.
