When Nikolaj Nøddebo Beck was growing up, a job at Arla was his dream. His first opportunity came while he was still at school and he was hired as a casual worker at the local Arla cheese dairy in his spare time.
The second came while he was studying to be a food process technologist. He was employed at the Arla cream cheese dairy in Holstebro. So, when he applied for his first full-time position as coordinator in the dairy’s quality department, he already had a foot in the door.
“Ever since I was at school, I have thought working for Arla is exciting. I’ve always been interested in food products – what’s behind them and how things work,” Nikolaj says.
An influence on the strategy
Nikolaj moved from Arla to Arla Foods Ingredients in 2011 where he started off working in technical sales. Today he is account manager at the Arla Foods Ingredients office in the US.
“In sales I’m involved in developing new concepts and projects, and I also have an influence on the strategy for my market. But nobody sits with the same market all the time. During my years with Arla Foods Ingredients, I have visited 19 countries on five continents.”
Sparring with colleagues
Nikolaj had little experience of sales at the beginning so sparring with good colleagues has helped him a lot in building the knowledge he needs. And his technical background is a great advantage when supporting customers with application trials.
In the US, his main focus is the bakery industry. Since avian flu led to an egg shortage and high prices a few years back, bakery companies have shown a growing interest in Arla Foods Ingredients’ egg-replacing whey proteins. Nikolaj is happy to say that many customers have remained loyal since egg supplies returned to normal.
Many new challenges
In a company with four focus industries and many work functions, there are many possibilities to take on a fresh challenge and develop new skills.
“The exciting thing about working for Arla Foods Ingredients is there is always something new going on. There are so many career opportunities,” Nikolaj says, adding with a grin:
“I’ve worked out that I’ve got enough working life left to reach my 50th anniversary here.”
