Proteins are hot!

More and more new product launches come with protein claims as manufacturers respond to this growing mainstream trend

Consumer belief in the health benefits of proteins has skyrocketed, and food manufacturers are responding with a wide range of new and reformulated products to meet this demand. According to Datamonitor, over 30% of consumers today look for protein information when reading product labels.

It’s not just about consumer perceptions, either. A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports a link between the consumption of a high-protein breakfast and appetite control later in the day. This has contributed to a new breakfast-time focus for weight management products.

Along with the many high-protein dairy products appearing on the market, protein is also making its way into new frozen desserts and even bread  – all targeting the health-conscious consumer. Datamonitor’s statistics for frozen yoghurt in the US are one illustration of the trend, with 45% of all product launches bearing a high-protein claim in 2011-2012.

Earlier this year, Arla Foods Ingredients participated in the 2013 Protein Trends & Technologies seminar arranged by Global Food Forums, Inc. The event provided a wealth of valuable information for manufacturers of protein-en¬hanced foods, beverages and nutritional products. If you didn’t manage to attend, you can read the special report here.
