Milk fat globular membrane

Milk fat globules are surrounded by a double-layered phospholipid membrane comprising extremely bioactive components. At Arla Foods Ingredients, we have incorporated many of these components in our natural whey protein concentrate Lacprodan® MFGM-10 for infant nutrition.

The unique protein and lipid profile of Lacprodan® MFGM-10 includes bioactive compounds, such as lactoferrin, IgG, sialic acid, phospholipids and gangliosides. This unique make-up is behind antiviral and antibacterial mechanisms that combat gut-derived infections.

Infant nutrition
The bioactive components of MFGM are present in much lower concentrations in bovine milk than in human milk, where they perform several roles in infant nutrition:

  • Phospholipids support neonatal gut maturation and myelination of the central nervous system
  • Gangliosides promote a beneficial gut microflora and support intestinal maturation and cognitive development
  • MFGM proteins possess anti-pathogenic decoy effects
  • Lactoferrin protects against microbial infections
