Alpha-lactalbumin

Alpha-lactalbumin is rich in essential and conditionally essential amino acids and is a dominant protein in human milk. In infant formula products, adding alpha-lactalbumin has a number of nutritional and physiological advantages.

The high content of cysteine in alpha-lactalbumin is also valuable in boosting the immune system and promoting wound healing. Alpha-lactalbumin also has a high level of tryptophan, which may help improve mood, sleep and cognitive performance.

Infant nutrition
By using our LACPRODAN® ALPHA-10 or ALPHA-20, manufacturers can reduce the overall protein content of infant formula products. Both products are high in alpha-lactalbumin and are ideal for modifying the proteins in infant formula, giving them a profile closer to human milk.

Alpha-lactalbumin can also facilitate the absorption of minerals and exert antibacterial and immunomodulatory effects.

The content of specific milk proteins in bovine milk is very different to that of human milk. Around 60% of the protein in mature human milk comprises whey proteins that primarily consist of alpha-
lactalbumin.

In bovine milk, whey proteins only make up around 18% of the protein. Of that, the most dominant whey protein is beta-lactoglobulin, which is not present in human milk.
LACPRODAN® ALPHA-10 and ALPHA-20 make it possible to reduce beta-lactoglobulin and increase alpha-lactalbumin in infant formula.

Health and performance products
Periods of intense physical activity can temporarily suppress the immune system and expose individuals to an increased risk of infection.

Compared to other protein sources, LACPRODAN® ALPHA-10 and LACPRODAN ALPHA-20 have a unique documented ability to boost the immune function by providing cysteine. This is essential in large quantities for the production of the tripeptide glutathione, which is a key component of the body’s antioxidant and immune system.

LACPRODAN ALPHA-10 and LACPRODAN ALPHA-20 contain high levels of the serotonin precursor tryptophan that benefits mood, cognitive performance and improved sleep pattern.

Clinical trials have demonstrated significant reductions in depression after an intake of alpha-lactalbumin. Other trials have shown improved visual memory. Lastly, trials have shown improved sleep patterns by increasing sleepiness, reducing sleep latency and improving morning alertness.
