Alpha-lactalbumin

Alpha-lactalbumin is rich in essential and conditionally essential amino acids and is a dominant protein in human milk.

Functional foods
Lacprodan® ALPHA-20 contains high levels of the serotonin precursor tryptophan, believed to improve mood, cognitive performance and sleep patterns.

Clinical trials have demonstrated significant reductions in depression following intake of alpha-lactalbumin. Other trials have shown that visual memory is enhanced and sleep patterns improved through an increase in sleepiness, reduced sleep latency and greater morning alertness.

Infant nutrition
In infant formula products, the addition of one of our alpha-lactalbumin products, Lacprodan® ALPHA-10 or ALPHA-20, has a number of nutritional and physiological advantages.

Manufacturers can add Lacprodan® ALPHA-10/20 to reduce the overall protein content of infant formula and mimic human milk in terms of protein concentration. Low-protein formulas are known to reduce the risk of obesity later in life (metabolic programming).

Alpha-lactalbumin also reduces gastrointestinal discomfort related to formula feeding and supports a healthy gut flora. The very high content of the essential amino acid tryptophan is thought to improve infant sleep patterns.

Sports nutrition
Periods of intense physical activity can temporarily suppress the immune system and expose individuals to an increased risk of infection.

Compared to other protein sources, our Lacprodan® ALPHA-10 and Lacprodan® ALPHA-20 have a unique documented ability to boost the immune function due to their high content of the amino acid cysteine. This is essential for the production of glutathione, a key component of the body’s antioxidant and immune system, also promoting wound healing.
