Our responsibility in the supply chain
One of our priorities as a supplier to the global food industry is to play our part in securing a responsible, sustainable supply chain. In doing so, our objective is to assist our customers in meeting the expectations of retailers, consumers and other stakeholders with an interest in their business.

As a subsidiary of Arla Foods, we follow the principles for ethical business set out in the Arla Foods Code of Conduct. We also support the suppliers of our primary raw material – milk whey – in doing the same.The Arla Dairy Farm quality assurance programme must ensure that the milk is of high quality and is produced responsibly and dairy farmers in Denmark, Sweden and the UK are expected to comply. Where whey is sourced from other countries, we work with our joint venture partners towards a similarly high standard (as local conditions may allow). 

Social responsibility platform
Today, a number of our international customers have joined the AIM-PROGRESS programme for responsible sourcing. As members, they recognise a common approach to assessing corporate social responsibility performance within the supply chain. This is a development that we warmly welcome. By gathering best practice, AIM-PROGRESS has created a platform that promises to set a new social responsibility standard for the food industry. We look forward to working with our customers to consolidate this initiative.

Arla Foods Ingredients is registered with Sedex, the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange. To facilitate the sharing of ethical data, our whey processing plants in Germany and Argentina have undergone a Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA). A similar audit will take place at our Danish plant in the near future.In line with our own commitment, we expect our partners to be registered with Sedex and to have completed the Sedex self-assessment.


We are co-funding a project to investigate the potential benefits of whey permeate and whey protein in treating children with moderately acute malnutrition. We have chosen to support this work through an annual financial donation and to inform MSF about our findings of clinical studies into the nutritional properties of milk components.
